NewyDex - crowdsourcing a digital pulse for Newcastle + region

At Eighteen04, we know that data tells a story about place, its people and how they're interacting from moment to moment. We've been wondering what a single composite index, drawing on real-time data from a diverse range of data-sources, tell us and the world about our place in it? Whilst it's one thing to be a Smart City, it's also important to ensure a city is Liveable - that means tracking our performance across a broad range of individual measures to come up with a composite score, on criteria that matter to the people who live here, and to those who might be considering it.

We've been keeping an eye on all the ways that people #LoveNewy and think it's time for some quality work on building a score that tells us a story about ourselves, acting as a real time cultural signal. Naturally, there's related work internationally that we take account of and factor into our thinking, so that we ensure real time data is both valid + valuable. Across our Residents and Board, we're exploring what a composite index might look like for our place in the world, with active collaboration underway between Newie Ventures, Laughing Mind, Anditi and SwitchDin.

We'll have more to say about it soon, but in the meantime, we also want to hear from you.

What are the things that make Newcastle and the region, "Newy" for you? Is it the number of laps swum in Newcastle or Merewether Ocean baths? The percentage of craft beers consumed from local artisans rather than bulk producers? The % of Hunter river prawns in your prawn roll? Number of coffees served to local Tugboat crews from Lynchs Hub?

We know we could create a peer comparator index that tells us how well we rate internationally on Most Liveable Cities, but at the same time, we also want to track the things that make us unique. Help us explore the story more next time you're posting on the #LoveNewy hashtag - if the thing you're celebrating is something measurable, relevant to our region, captures our uniqueness and tells a story of our place in the world, drop a #NewyDex hashtag onto it. If you want to be part of the build phase of #NewyDex, get in touch.
